How to inspect your roof

Taking care of your roof is very important and a yearly inspection can help prevent damage and prevent expensive repairs.

Inspecting your roof may sound redundant but it is something that you should do at least once a year. It’s fairly simple and does not take too much time. You can inspect a roof using two methods. If you do not want to go up on the roof, use a pair of binoculars.

Let’s start with the basics. If you are going to use binoculars, just look for a few things and be sure to look closely. Whether you are using binoculars or actually going up on the roof here are some things to look for,

1. Areas with moss, algae or heavy leaves.
2. Cracked caulk or rust spots
3. Missing, damaged and aging shingles.
4. Inspect your gutters. (look for signs of rot)
5. Check the age of your roofing and see if it’s nearing the end of its life cycle
6. Check the gutters for decay or rust, or anything that looks out of the ordinary.
7. If you see any of these things, hire a professional

Also, for a quick fix, check for nails that need to be hammered back into place.

Early Signs of a Roof Leak

Roof problems can happen at any time but doing a yearly roof checkup is a great start to a healthy roof. Early signs of trouble include:

1. Dark spots on ceilings
2. Peeling/chipping paint on the bottom of roof extensions
3. Water stains on pipes venting the furnace or your water heater
